Running a wedding planning business

September 21, 2009 by · 2 Comments

How do you run a successful wedding planning business? If only I had a dollar for every time I have been asked that question. I know I have said it before in other posts but running a business and being a wedding planner do not go hand in hand. Unfortunately, just because you are a great wedding planner doesn’t mean that you will automatically be a good business person. The business of weddings takes different skills to the planning of weddings.

There is something that I lovingly refer to as ‘The 6 P’s of Launching a successful Wedding Planning Business. They cover the basics you need to know when taking those first faltering steps:

  • Preparation – without good preparation even the best business ideas will fail
  • Purpose - if you don’t know what the purpose of your business is – how will anyone else
  • Price - you can’t make up your prices as you go along. You need to analyse your costs to help you dictate your fees
  • Promotion – although word of mouth is by far the best marketing tool, you need to create the buzz to get the word of mouth happening
  • Performance – without a good consultation technique you’ll never get the chance to show off your planning skills
  • Proposal – this is the deal breaker. A good proposal will win or loose you your client

Now if you notice, no where in there is anything about etiquette, flowers, cakes, sourcing a venue, tool kits or anything else to do with planning a wedding. Why? Because we are assuming you already know how to plan a wedding or why else would you be launching a wedding planning business? There are plenty of courses that teach you the intricate details of wedding planning. Our Certificate in Wedding Planning is a fantastic tool for this. All these courses will also teach you the basics of starting your new business, but there is so much more to it that really there should be an entire course dedicated simply to launching and running your business.

There may not be a course available on the business of weddings, but there is a workshop. For those of you who are nearing the end of your course, or about to launch your business, or maybe just in need of some inspiration then this Power Weekend Workshop should be on your agenda. It will be your chance to learn all about the ’6 P’s of Planning’ and alot more besides.

Don’t stumble around in the dark on this. You only have one shot to make a first impression so make it count. Arm yourself with all the right tools and don’t go in blind. For more information on the workshop visit the Workshop Website or Download a Brochure. To register and catch the Early Bird price before it finishes on the 2nd of October follow this link to register online.
