A New Year’s Resolution for your Business

January 6, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

new-year-resHow many times do we hear people talking about their New Year’s Resolutions? Mores to the point, how many times do they keep the resolutions they’ve made? I’m sure most of our dear readers fall into this category, I know I do. So when deciding on a New Year’s Resolution for your business try not to fall into the same trap. Don’t set yourself goals that are unrealistic because if you do, you will start the year off knowing they are unachievable and subconsciously tell yourself they are impossible to achieve and therefore never achieve them.

I know that was a long winded way of saying it but hopefully you now get my drift. Whatever your goals are for your business this year make sure they have a purpose and aren’t just ‘Pie in the Sky’. I’m not for one minute suggesting that you shouldn’t be ambitious or have a long term goal, but I have always thought that a New Year’s Resolution for your business should be more about setting a pathway for yourself to follow for the year ahead. It should give you purpose and drive but ultimately be achievable.

The beginning of the year is a wonderful time to take stock and work out where you want to take your business in the year that lies ahead. It’s a blank piece of paper for you to write a new plan. If your business has been bumbling along with no particular plan then now is the time to inject some new life into it. Maybe you’ve had some big plans that just don’t seem to be getting anywhere, well now is the time to revisit those plans and maybe break them down a little to make them more achievable.

Whatever your reason there is no better time than at the start of a new year to plot and plan the course your business will take for the coming year. No matter how successful your business is it will always need some fine tuning and tweaking. There are always things that work and things that don’t and the sign of a successful business person is the one that is willing to admit when things don’t work, take them out of the running and focus on the things that do work.

So if you do nothing else today, sit down with some blank pieces of paper and jot down everything that makes up your business. It is a brainstorming process similar to the one you should use when putting together a theme for a client’s event. Once you have filled the page with words that relate to your business then start to make some sense of them. Put them into groups and write yourself a mission statement for the year. Once you have done that you should have a firmer idea of where your business is going and what you need to achieve for the year.

Good luck and enjoy this wonderful process that makes running your own business worthwhile.
